IB Math IA Criterion E — Use of Mathematics (6 Marks)

Criterion E is the most heavily weighted criterion in the IB Math Internal Assessment, carrying 6 out of 20 marks. It assesses the sophistication, accuracy, and relevance of the mathematics you use in your exploration. Getting this right is the single biggest lever on your final IA score.

What Does “Use of Mathematics” Actually Mean?

The IB differentiates sharply between mathematics that is relevant, correct, and sophisticated. All three elements must be present for full marks. Sophisticated does not necessarily mean complex — it means mathematics that is commensurate with the level of the course and applied with genuine understanding.

What Does “Sophisticated” Mean for AA vs AI?

Math AA (Analysis and Approaches): Sophistication usually involves formal proof, advanced calculus, complex number applications, or rigorous algebraic reasoning beyond a single technique.

Math AI (Applications and Interpretation): Sophistication involves appropriate use of statistical tests, mathematical modelling with justification, or multi-stage quantitative reasoning applied to a real-world scenario.

In both cases, the key is that the mathematics goes beyond a single application of one technique — it builds, connects, and extends.

Common Mistakes That Cap Your Score

  • Using below-level mathematics: An HL student using only SL-level techniques will be capped, even if everything is correct.
  • Arithmetic errors: A single uncorrected computational error can cost 2 marks. Show all working so the examiner can see where an error entered.
  • Mathematics that is correct but not relevant: Including calculations that don’t connect to your exploration question is penalised — relevance is a separate requirement.
  • No mathematical reasoning: Writing results without explaining the mathematical logic behind them reduces your score even if the numbers are right.

How to Maximise Your Criterion E Score

  • Choose a topic that naturally requires mathematics at or above your course level
  • Use multiple connected techniques rather than one method applied repeatedly
  • Verify results where possible (e.g., check a derivative by computing a numerical approximation)
  • Explain why each mathematical step is valid, not just what it produces
  • Extend or generalise a result to show mathematical depth
