Meet Mr Ahmad — Your IB Math Tutor in Dubai
My name is Mr Ahmad and I am a specialist IB Mathematics tutor based in Dubai. I have been tutoring IB Math students for over seven years, working exclusively with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme across all four mathematics courses: Analysis & Approaches HL, Analysis & Approaches SL, Applications & Interpretation HL, and Applications & Interpretation SL.
I am not a general tutor who covers everything from GCSE to A-Level to IB on the side. IB Mathematics is all I do. That means when a student sits down with me, I know exactly which examiner reports flagged a particular topic as a weakness in the last session, which calculator techniques earn method marks on Paper 2, and what the mark scheme actually wants when it says “show that” versus “prove.” That level of specificity is what separates a specialist IB Math tutor from a general maths teacher, and it is what consistently helps my students move from a 4 to a 6, or from a 6 to a 7.
Over the years I have worked with students from virtually every major international school in Dubai — GEMS schools, Repton, Jumeirah College, Dubai College, Kings’ School, JESS, and many others. I understand the pace and style each school uses to teach the IB syllabus, which means I can work in sync with what your child is doing in class rather than starting from scratch.
I offer lessons at the student’s home across Dubai and fully online via an interactive whiteboard setup. Both formats are available on weekday evenings and weekends to fit around school schedules.
Why IB Math Requires a Specialist Tutor
Many families in Dubai find a capable general maths tutor and assume that will be enough for the IB. It often is not — and the reason comes down to how different IB Mathematics is from every other curriculum.
The IB uses a specific set of command terms — “find,” “show that,” “hence,” “prove,” “justify,” “comment” — each with a precise meaning in the mark scheme. A student who answers a “show that” question by using the answer as a shortcut gets zero marks, even if their working is mathematically correct. A student who does not know that “hence” means you must use the previous part gets zero on a three-mark question they could easily have solved a different way. These are not minor details — they cost students entire grade bands.
Then there is the internal assessment. The Math IA is worth 20% of the final grade and it is one of the most misunderstood pieces of work in the IB. The topic choice, the mathematical content level, the exploration structure, and the personal engagement all feed into a mark that can lift or drag a final grade. Students who choose a topic that is too simple or too broad frequently score 10–14 out of 20 even when their written work looks polished.
IB exam preparation is another area where specialist knowledge matters enormously. Paper 3 in both AI HL and AA HL presents a completely unfamiliar scenario and asks students to apply, adapt, and extend techniques from across the course. Students who have never practised Paper 3 under timed conditions before the real exam regularly underperform even when their general knowledge of the syllabus is strong.
Working with a tutor who knows the IB system from the inside — the mark schemes, the examiner reports, the past paper patterns, the IA criteria — is a completely different experience from working with a tutor who knows the mathematics but not the exam.

IB Math Courses I Tutor
I cover all four IB Mathematics courses currently offered under the 2019 syllabus (first assessed 2021). Here is what each course involves and who it is suited for:
IB Math Analysis & Approaches HL (AA HL)
The most demanding IB Math course. AA HL is chosen by students heading towards mathematics, engineering, physics, or economics at selective universities. It covers abstract algebra, formal proof (direct, contradiction, induction), complex numbers in all forms, calculus at near-undergraduate level (integration techniques, differential equations, Maclaurin series), 3D vectors, and a Paper 3 that tests unfamiliar pure mathematics problems. See the full AA HL course specifications and practise with the AA HL question bank.
IB Math Analysis & Approaches SL (AA SL)
AA SL covers algebra, functions, calculus (differentiation and integration), trigonometry, vectors, statistics and probability. It is the standard academic mathematics course for IB students who need strong mathematics without the full rigour of AA HL. See the AA SL course specifications and practise with the AA SL question bank.
IB Math Applications & Interpretation HL (AI HL)
AI HL is the statistics and modelling course at Higher Level. It covers hypothesis testing, regression analysis, Markov chains, transition matrices, graph theory, Voronoi diagrams, financial mathematics, and a Paper 3 data investigation. See the full AI HL course specifications and syllabus and practise with the AI HL question bank.
IB Math Applications & Interpretation SL (AI SL)
AI SL is designed for students whose university programmes require mathematical literacy rather than mathematical depth — social sciences, psychology, business, and environmental science. It covers statistics, financial mathematics, geometry, trigonometry, and basic calculus in applied contexts. See the AI SL course specifications and practise with the AI SL question bank.

The Topics IB Math Students Struggle With Most
After seven years of tutoring IB Math in Dubai, I see the same gaps appearing again and again. Here are the areas where students most commonly lose marks and how I address them:
Integration (AA HL and AA SL)
Integration by parts, integration by substitution, and choosing the right technique are the most common sources of lost marks in AA Paper 1 and Paper 2. Practise with the AA HL Calculus question bank or the AA SL Calculus question bank.
Hypothesis Testing (AI HL and AI SL)
The most misunderstood area in AI. Students often know how to run a test on their GDC but cannot correctly state the null and alternative hypotheses or interpret the p-value in context. Every step is marked separately. Practise with the AI HL Statistics & Probability question bank or the AI SL Statistics question bank.
Paper 3 Preparation (AA HL and AI HL)
Paper 3 is the paper students are least prepared for because schools spend the least time on it. The only way to improve at Paper 3 is to practise full Paper 3s under timed conditions. Use the past papers and mark schemes section and the mock exams to build this under exam conditions.
Proof and Formal Justification (AA HL)
Mathematical proof — particularly proof by induction and proof by contradiction — is an AA HL topic that students often feel comfortable with until the exam presents a slightly unfamiliar structure. Practise with the AA HL Number & Algebra question bank which covers proof in depth.
Graph Theory and Markov Chains (AI HL)
Both topics are completely new for most AI HL students. Graph theory algorithms and Markov chains with transition matrices are areas where starting early makes a large difference. Practise with the AI HL Geometry question bank (graph theory) and the AI HL Statistics question bank (Markov chains).
The Formula Booklet
Knowing what is and is not in the IB Math formula sheets is itself a skill. Students who assume everything is in the booklet lose marks when a formula they expected is not listed. Download the formula booklets and practise navigating them during past paper sessions.
The Internal Assessment (all courses)
The Math IA is worth 20% of the final grade. The most common mistakes: choosing a topic with insufficient mathematical content, failing to show personal engagement, and not meeting the communication criteria. I guide students through every stage. See the exam tips and strategies section for IA guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does IB Math tutoring in Dubai cost?
There are four packages to choose from depending on your child’s needs and how close the exams are. The Starter package is one 60-minute session per week at AED 299 per session, which includes a personalised lesson and homework review. The Exam Booster is two sessions per week at AED 550 per week, with intensive past paper practice and exam tips. The Full Prep package is three sessions per week at AED 750 per week, covering the full syllabus and exam strategy. For students who need maximum flexibility and priority support, the VIP Unlimited package is available at custom pricing. See full package details →
Do you offer online IB Math tutoring from outside Dubai?
Yes. I work with students across the UAE and internationally. The online tutoring setup uses an interactive whiteboard and works well for all IB Math courses. Contact me to check time zone availability.
Which IB Math course is harder — AA or AI?
Neither is harder in an absolute sense. AA HL demands abstract reasoning, algebraic fluency, and formal proof. AI HL demands statistical thinking, data interpretation, and applied modelling. Which feels harder depends entirely on the student. See the AI HL syllabus and the AA HL syllabus to compare directly.
Can you help with the IB Math Internal Assessment?
Yes. IA support is included in all packages. I help with topic selection, research question, mathematical content, exploration structure, and final draft review. See exam tips and strategies for more IA guidance.
My child has exams in six weeks — is it too late to start?
Six weeks is enough time to make a meaningful difference. The Exam Booster or Full Prep package works best for last-minute preparation. Use the mock exams and past papers alongside tutoring sessions for maximum impact. Many students see a one-grade improvement in six to eight weeks of intensive sessions.
Do you tutor students from all Dubai schools?
Yes. I have worked with students from GEMS schools, Repton, Jumeirah College, Dubai College, Kings’ School, JESS, Horizon, Sunmarke, and many others. Read more about Mr Ahmad →
What materials do you use?
I use official IB past papers and mark schemes, the formula sheets, examiner reports, and my own question banks for each topic. I do not rely on any single textbook — the IB past paper is the best guide to what the exam actually tests.
Do you offer group tutoring?
No. All sessions are one-to-one across all packages. The whole point is that every minute is targeted at one student’s specific gaps — not divided across a group with different weaknesses.
