IB Math Exam Tips and Strategies — AA and AI, SL and HL

After seven years of tutoring IB Math students in Dubai and internationally, I have seen the same exam mistakes come up again and again. Most of them are not caused by a lack of mathematical knowledge — they are caused by not knowing how the IB exam works. These are the strategies I teach every student before their Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3.

Understand the Command Terms — They Are Not Interchangeable

The IB uses specific command terms and each one has a precise meaning in the mark scheme. Getting this wrong costs marks even when your mathematics is correct.

  • “Find” — show a method and give the answer. Working required.
  • “Calculate” — typically a numerical answer with working shown (especially in AI courses with GDC).
  • “Show that” — you are given the answer. You must derive it fully. Using the given answer as a shortcut earns zero marks, even if your substitution looks reasonable.
  • “Hence” — you must use the result of the previous part. Solving the problem a different way (even correctly) gets zero.
  • “Hence or otherwise” — you may use a different method, but the “hence” route is always shorter. Use it.
  • “Prove” — a formal, rigorous argument is required. In AA HL this means proof by induction, contradiction, or direct algebraic proof, written to a high standard of notation.
  • “Justify” — give a reason for your answer, not just the answer. One sentence of mathematical reasoning is usually enough.
  • “Comment” — interpret your answer in context. This is most common in AI Statistics questions after a hypothesis test.

Paper 1 Strategy (No Calculator — AA Only)

Paper 1 for AA HL and AA SL is the paper most students underestimate. Every question must be solved by hand, which means algebraic accuracy and technique speed are everything.

  • Do not spend more than 2 minutes per mark. A 6-mark question should take no more than 12 minutes. If you are stuck after 5 minutes, move on and come back.
  • Show every step of working. In many questions, method marks are awarded for correct working even if the final answer is wrong. A student who writes the correct setup but makes an arithmetic error at the end can still earn 2 out of 3 marks.
  • Know what is not in the formula booklet. The quadratic formula, double angle identities for cos, and basic index laws are not given. Students who assume they are waste time searching for them during the exam.
  • Write neatly and label everything. If an examiner cannot follow your working, they will not award method marks. This is especially important on integration by parts and substitution questions.

Paper 2 Strategy (With GDC — All Courses)

Paper 2 allows the GDC, but this is not as helpful as students think if they do not know how to use it efficiently.

  • Know your GDC deeply for your specific course. AI students need to run hypothesis tests (t-test, chi-squared) and regression analysis. AA students need to solve equations, find intersections, and sketch functions. Practice the exact button sequences until they are automatic.
  • Write the GDC setup as part of your working. Even when a question says “write down,” you should note what you entered into the calculator. This protects method marks if your GDC gives a wrong answer due to a mode error.
  • Check calculator mode. Degrees vs radians is the most common error on Paper 2 trigonometry questions in AA. Set your GDC to the correct mode at the start of every question.
  • For AI students: always state the null and alternative hypotheses before running any test. These marks are awarded separately from the GDC output. Students who go straight to the p-value without writing H₀ and H₁ lose 2 marks per hypothesis test question.

Paper 3 Strategy (AA HL and AI HL Only)

Paper 3 is 60 minutes, technology active, and presents a scenario you have never seen before. The question will guide you through unfamiliar territory using techniques from across the syllabus — and that is exactly what makes it different from Papers 1 and 2.

  • Read the entire paper before starting. Paper 3 is one long investigation. Parts (a) through (m) build on each other. Understanding the arc of the question before you begin helps you see where each part is going and avoids dead ends.
  • Each part is designed to be answered using the result of the previous part. If you are stuck on part (d), look at what parts (a), (b), and (c) gave you. The answer to (d) almost certainly uses at least one of them.
  • Do not abandon a part just because the result looks unusual. Paper 3 regularly produces answers that look strange — a coefficient of 0.003, a negative probability before transformation, an unfamiliar matrix. This is often intentional. Continue with whatever result you have and note “using the result from part (c)”.
  • Practise under timed conditions. The only way to improve at Paper 3 is to do Paper 3s. Use the past papers and mock exams to build this skill before the real exam.

Internal Assessment (IA) Tips — All Courses

The IB Math Internal Assessment is worth 20% of your final grade and is assessed against five criteria: Communication, Mathematical Presentation, Personal Engagement, Reflection, and Use of Mathematics. Here is where most students lose marks:

  • Topic choice determines your ceiling. A topic with insufficient mathematical content cannot score above 12–14 out of 20 no matter how well it is written. Choose a topic where you can apply multiple techniques from the course and extend beyond what you have covered in class.
  • Personal engagement is not enthusiasm. Writing “I have always been fascinated by…” does not score marks. Personal engagement is demonstrated when you go beyond the standard mathematical treatment: posing your own sub-questions, making your own conjectures, testing your model against real data you collected, or identifying limitations and adjusting your approach.
  • The research question must be answerable with mathematics. Vague questions like “How does maths relate to music?” score poorly. Specific, mathematical questions like “How accurately does a logistic growth model predict the spread of this dataset?” give the exploration direction and allow clear reflection at the end.
  • Reflection must be critical, not descriptive. Summarising what you did is not reflection. Discussing why a result was unexpected, what the limitations of your model are, and how you would extend the investigation scores marks. One genuine critical reflection is worth more than three paragraphs of summary.

Exam Week Preparation

  • Do full past papers under timed conditions in the week before the exam. Not question-by-question practice — full papers, timed, with the formula booklet in hand, the way the real exam works. Use the past papers section to find the most recent papers for your course.
  • Review mark schemes critically. When you check your paper, do not just mark right or wrong. Read what the mark scheme says for each question you got wrong and understand exactly which line of working earned which mark. This is the fastest way to learn IB exam technique.
  • Identify your two or three highest-value weak topics and close them. Do not try to review the entire syllabus in the last week. Use the question banks to drill the specific topics where you are dropping the most marks.
