Exam Prep for Past Papers

IB Math Exam Preparation in Dubai — Past Papers, Mock Exams, and Targeted Revision

IB Math exam preparation is not just about reviewing the syllabus — it is about knowing how the IB exam works, what the mark scheme rewards, and how to perform under timed conditions. I offer intensive exam preparation for all four IB Mathematics courses, with a focus on past paper technique, Paper 3 strategy, and closing the specific gaps that are costing your child marks right now.

What IB Math Exam Preparation Actually Involves

Many students spend the weeks before their IB Math exams reviewing notes and watching explanations online. These are not effective exam preparation strategies on their own. What actually moves the grade is:

  • Practising full papers under timed, exam conditions
  • Reviewing mark schemes critically — understanding which lines of working earned which marks and why
  • Identifying the specific topics and question types where marks are being lost
  • Drilling those topics with targeted questions from the question banks
  • Building Paper 3 fluency through repeated practice on past Paper 3 investigations
  • Learning the IB command terms so “show that,” “hence,” and “justify” questions are answered correctly

This is what my exam preparation sessions focus on. I do not re-teach the entire syllabus in the final weeks — I identify the highest-value gaps and work on those systematically alongside full paper practice.

Exam Preparation by Course

AA HL Exam Preparation

AA HL has three papers. Paper 1 (no calculator, 120 minutes) tests algebraic fluency and technique. Paper 2 (GDC, 120 minutes) covers the full range of HL topics with technology. Paper 3 (GDC, 60 minutes) presents an unfamiliar extended investigation in pure mathematics. For AA HL students the main exam preparation priorities are: integration technique on Paper 1, proof and formal justification, complex numbers, and Paper 3 practice on past investigations. Use the AA HL question bank to target specific topics.

AA SL Exam Preparation

AA SL has two papers — Paper 1 (no calculator) and Paper 2 (GDC). The most common sources of lost marks in AA SL are integration errors on Paper 1, function composition and inverse function questions, and probability questions where the student does not correctly set up a tree diagram or conditional probability. Use the AA SL question bank for topic-by-topic drilling.

AI HL Exam Preparation

AI HL also has three papers. Paper 1 (no calculator, 90 minutes), Paper 2 (GDC, 90 minutes), and Paper 3 (GDC, 60 minutes — a data investigation. For AI HL students the exam preparation priority is hypothesis testing (correctly stating H₀ and H₁, interpreting the p-value in context), Markov chains and transition matrices, and Paper 3 data investigation practice. Use the AI HL question bank to target specific topics.

AI SL Exam Preparation

AI SL has two papers, both with a GDC. The most common losses in AI SL are hypothesis testing interpretation, financial mathematics (compound interest, loan repayments, amortisation), and geometry and trigonometry questions where students confuse the sine and cosine rules. Use the AI SL question bank for targeted revision.

How Long Before the Exam Should You Start?

The honest answer is: the earlier the better. But these are the realistic timelines I work with:

  • 3+ months out: The best time to start structured exam preparation. We can work through the entire syllabus systematically, identify and close gaps properly, and do full paper practice with time to review and improve.
  • 6–8 weeks out: Still very effective. The focus shifts to targeted gap-closing and past paper technique rather than full syllabus review. Most students who start here see a one-grade improvement by exam day.
  • 3–4 weeks out: Intensive mode. We triage — identify the two or three topics where the most marks are being lost and drill those, while doing full papers for technique. This is what the Exam Booster package is designed for.
  • 1–2 weeks out: Full paper practice and mark scheme review only. At this point, attempting to learn new material is counterproductive. The goal is to maximise the marks available from what the student already knows.

The Resources I Use for Exam Preparation

  • Official IB past papers and mark schemes — the single most important exam preparation resource. I have a library of past papers for every course going back to the 2021 first assessment.
  • Mock exams — full-paper mock exams under timed conditions, marked against the IB mark scheme. Essential for building exam stamina and identifying time management issues before the real exam.
  • Topic question banks — organised by topic and difficulty level, for targeted practice on specific areas.
  • The IB formula booklet — knowing what is and is not in the booklet is itself a skill. I teach students to navigate the formula booklet efficiently so they are not wasting time during the exam.
  • IB examiner reports — I review the most recent examiner reports for your course before our sessions to understand exactly what the current cohort is losing marks on and how to avoid those errors.

Exam Preparation Packages

I offer three packages suited to different stages of exam preparation. The Exam Booster (two sessions per week) is the most popular for students in the final six to eight weeks before their IB exams. The Full Prep package (three sessions per week) is for students who need intensive support over a longer period. See the full breakdown on the tutoring packages page.
