IB MYP Math Criterion D — Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts (8 Marks)
Criterion D is the most applied criterion in MYP Mathematics. It assesses your ability to identify mathematical strategies suited to real-world problems, apply them correctly, and reflect on how well your solution addresses the original situation. Worth 8 marks, it is typically assessed through modelling or design tasks with a real-life context.
What Does Criterion D Assess?
The IB defines Criterion D as the ability to:
- Identify relevant elements of authentic real-life situations
- Select appropriate mathematical strategies to model these situations
- Apply these strategies to reach a solution
- Explain whether the results make sense in the context of the problem
- Reflect on the degree of accuracy of the solution
- Suggest improvements to the model or approach

| 5–6 | The student is able to identify the relevant elements of the authentic real-life situation; select and apply mathematical strategies to reach a correct solution; explain whether the solution makes sense in context; state the possible limitations of the solution. |
| 7–8 | The student is able to identify the relevant elements of the authentic real-life situation; select and apply mathematical strategies to reach a correct solution; explain whether the solution makes sense in context; explain the possible limitations of the solution; suggest improvements to the mathematical model or method. |
How Criterion D Differs From Criterion A
Criterion A tests mathematical knowledge in both familiar and unfamiliar mathematical settings. Criterion D specifically tests the ability to move between a real-world context and mathematical representation — this is called mathematical modelling. You must:
- Identify what is mathematically relevant in the real-world scenario
- Model it with appropriate mathematics
- Solve the mathematical problem
- Interpret the result back in the real-world context
- Evaluate and suggest improvements
Students who only complete steps 1–3 are limited to 3–4 marks.
How to Score 7–8 on Criterion D
- Begin by clearly stating the assumptions you are making and why (e.g., “I assume the population grows at a constant percentage rate”)
- Show how you moved from the real-world context to a mathematical model
- After solving, explicitly interpret your answer in the original context — don’t just state a number
- Discuss at least one specific limitation (not “my data could be better” but “my model assumes a flat terrain, which is unrealistic here”)
- Suggest a specific, meaningful improvement to your model
