What Is IB MYP Mathematics?
IB MYP Math is taught across Years 1–5 (roughly ages 11–16) and comes in two levels: Standard Mathematics and Extended Mathematics. Extended Mathematics prepares students for IB Math AA or AI at the DP level. Both follow a concept-driven, inquiry-based approach assessed through four criteria worth 8 marks each (total 32 marks).
MYP Math Assessment Criteria
Every piece of MYP Math assessment is evaluated against four criteria. Understanding each one — and what examiners look for — is essential for strong performance:
- Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding — Select and apply mathematical knowledge, concepts, and techniques to solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations.
- Criterion B: Investigating Patterns — Select and apply mathematical problem-solving techniques to discover complex patterns; describe patterns as general rules and justify them.
- Criterion C: Communicating — Use appropriate mathematical language and different forms of representation; move between forms of representation; communicate using mathematical reasoning.
- Criterion D: Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts — Identify relevant elements of authentic real-life situations, select appropriate mathematical strategies, apply them, and reflect on the solutions.
MYP Math Content Areas
MYP Mathematics is organised around five branches, which students explore in increasing depth across the five years:
- Number — integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, indices, standard form, surds (Extended)
- Algebra — expressions, equations, functions, sequences, inequalities
- Geometry and Trigonometry — properties of shapes, Pythagoras, trigonometric ratios, transformations
- Statistics and Probability — data handling, distributions, sampling, probability models
- Discrete Mathematics — logic, sets, combinatorics (mainly Extended)
