IB MYP to DP Math — Moving from MYP to IB Diploma Math

IB MYP to DP Math — Choosing the Right Course and Making the Transition

The move from IB MYP Mathematics to IB Diploma Programme (DP) Mathematics is one of the most consequential academic decisions a student makes. The choice of course — Math AA or AI, at SL or HL — affects university options, workload, and the kind of mathematical thinking you will develop over the next two years. This guide helps you make that decision wisely.

The Four DP Math Courses

Since the 2019 curriculum reform, IB Diploma students choose from four mathematics courses:

  • Math AA HL — Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level. The most demanding option. Pure mathematics, proof, rigorous calculus, complex numbers. Required for mathematics, engineering, physics, and competitive science programmes at leading universities.
  • Math AA SL — Analysis and Approaches, Standard Level. Strong algebraic and calculus content. Suitable for students who need mathematics for their degree but not at the highest level.
  • Math AI HL — Applications and Interpretation, Higher Level. Statistics-heavy, applied mathematics. Suitable for economics, social science, business, and students who prefer contextual over abstract mathematics.
  • Math AI SL — Applications and Interpretation, Standard Level. The most accessible DP option. Suitable for students for whom mathematics is not a core requirement of their intended degree.

Which Course Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on three factors: your MYP Math performance, your intended university subject, and the entry requirements of your target institutions.

Strong MYP Extended Math (scoring 6–7)

You are a viable candidate for Math AA HL or AI HL. If your intended career is in STEM, choose AA HL. If it is in economics, finance, or social sciences, consider AI HL. Do not choose AA HL simply for prestige — it demands a genuine love of abstract mathematics and significant study time.

Solid MYP Extended Math (scoring 4–5) or Standard Math (scoring 6–7)

Math AA SL or AI HL are natural choices. Consider AA SL if algebra and calculus come naturally to you, AI HL if you are more drawn to statistics and applications.

MYP Standard Math (scoring 3–5)

Math AI SL is the appropriate course. It still covers meaningful mathematics and is accepted by many university programmes. Do not take a course beyond your current level hoping to “rise to it” — the DP does not give students time to catch up on missing foundations.

Key Differences Between MYP and DP Math

  • Assessment structure: MYP uses four criteria (A–D) with ongoing summative tasks. DP uses external exams (80%) and an Internal Assessment (20%).
  • Pace: DP covers significantly more content in two years than MYP does in five. The pace is much faster.
  • Abstraction: DP Math AA, particularly HL, is more abstract and proof-based than anything encountered in MYP.
  • Internal Assessment: The DP Math IA (exploration) is a research paper, not a class task. It requires independent mathematical investigation over several months.

How to Prepare During MYP Year 5

  • Master all algebraic manipulation — factorising, solving equations, working with indices and surds
  • Be confident with functions, their graphs, and transformations
  • For AA: begin practising formal mathematical reasoning and proof
  • For AI: strengthen your statistics foundation — distributions, hypothesis testing, regression
  • Work on DP-style exam questions (past papers from Paper 1 and Paper 2) to understand the expected format
